Nowadays, hats are often made from cotton or wool. Man-made fabrics are also popular as they're durable and cheap.

They have another advantage too. Unlike natural fibers, synthetic materials tend to be moisture-wicking. This makes them ideal for exercise.

Are you interested in some custom hats? Ones that you'd be able to wear while exercising?

What is the best color to wear for sun protection?
The weave and weight are the most important factors in determining the sun protective effectiveness of fabrics, but it turns out color plays an important role too.

We were all told growing up to wear lighter colors because they are the coolest colors in the sun, but scientific studies have proven that darker colors are more effective at protecting us from the sun's harmful UV rays. Just like a denser weave can prevent UV rays from reaching and damaging our skin, so too can certain colors.

Choose dark and intense colors for sun protection
A study conducted in Spain found that fabrics with darker or more intense colors tended to have better UV radiation protection than lighter colors. Of all colors tested, dark blue offered the best levels of UV protection, making it the best color to wear in the sun. Contrary to the popular belief that they are the coolest colors in the sun, white and yellow were the worst performing colors in terms of UV protection.

So why is this the case? The researchers admitted that, whilst the results of their tests were conclusive, they were not entirely sure why some colors performed better at preventing UV rays from penetrating fabrics than others.

The Cancer Council in Australia suggests that darker colors absorb UV rays, which helps block them from your skin. That’s why dark blue, black, and dark red are the best colors for sun protection compared to white or pastel colors of the same fabric.

Let's take a look at some of the most popular materials used for making hats.

    1. Polyester
Polyester is a synthetic fiber. It is one of the most popular materials used in making hats. Actually, it is the staple fabric in modern hat making. It is made from recycled plastic. Polyester is a darling to hat makers and most hat lovers because it is durable and resistant to water and abrasions. We cannot think of any other fiber that is durable and cheaper than polyester.

The moisture-wicking property of polyester is also excellent. It excellently absorbs sweat from the skin, leaving it dry and comfortable. You would, therefore, enjoy wearing polyester hats all day long during summer.

Polyester is popular in exercise hats, dad hats (baseball caps), and summer hats, thanks to its moisture-wicking properties.

    2. Nylon
Nylon results in thin and lightweight caps suitable for hot summer days. The highly breathable material is made from recycled plastic. It makes the scorching summer days a lot cooler.

One thing you will love about nylon is that it does not shrink. We are often in constant worries of our hats losing their original shape, but nylon hats will eliminate the concern. Nylon hats are also easy to take care of.

The only problem is nylon is not great at wicking away moisture, but it tries its best.

    3. Cotton
Cotton is a natural fiber that's made from cellulose. Soft and breathable, it is often used in apparel—including hats.

Embroidered logos and designs are typically also made from cotton.

Unlike other fabrics, it is naturally hypoallergenic—this means that it will not irritate the skin. Other advantages include its abilities to insulate and control moisture.

When it comes to caps, it is often blended with other types of material such as polyester or rayon; this allows the product to be more durable.

    4. Wool

Wool is often obtained from lamb or sheep. However, it can also be from alpacas, llamas, or goats.

What's great about wool is that it is soft and moisture wicking. It also contains breathable air pockets, which allows you to stay cool in the heat.

Did you know that it is one of the most commonly used fibers used for making caps?

    5. Linen
Linen is a natural fiber that is extracted from the flax plant. If you are looking for another natural fiber other than cotton, linen should be suitable for you.

Just like cotton, Linen is very breathable and soft. They are incredibly comfortable and tender on your skin. You are sure to remain relaxed and comfortable during those fiercely hot summer days. Linen hats are also fantastic for spring.

    6. Straw
Straw hats are fashionable in protecting your head from the fierce sun rays during summer. They have also taken the world of fashion by storm. Straw is made of material from different plants and sometimes synthetic fibers.

Some of the plants used in making straw hats include bamboo, wheatgrass, papyrus reeds, and sisal.
